Application Note: Texaco's Use of Infrared on Process Gasifier Systems as a Predictive Maintenance Tool and The Effects of Wind On IR Survey Accuracy

Albert Amedee Ohliger
Texaco Inc – General Engineering Department, Bellaire, Texas

Infrared Thermography is a technology that has been used to monitor skin temperatures in many industries. Texaco began using this technology to confirm the integrity of the internal refractory on its Gasifier Vessels. The primary skin temperature measurement tool used is a series of thermocouples located along the bands on the outer skin of the vessel. Infrared was used to determine the integrity of this system and determine if there were any weaknesses in the internal refractory system.
